Economical

Video and sound installation (2011)

The installation downloads the latest commodity market values and sonifies them by means of a computers synthetic text to speech software, the results of which are visualised by an oscilliscopic output of this ongoing, live spoken narrative.

The use of a live data stream means that the installation’s content directly reflects the current drama of the market, and also the wider social and political happenings which, in turn, have an effect upon these commodity values and reports.

The style of the computer’s vocal delivery is intended to reflect the mechanisation of commodities and economic values, and to emphasise both a sense of detachment and connection with human reality. The oscilloscopic output intends to graphically reflect, at a hyper-speed, the volatility of the market.
